Jennifer J L Jones (b.1971) is an American artist raised in rural Virginia and the central east coast of Florida. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. Jones utilizes nature as inspiration for her mixed media paintings, exploring energy and beauty. Nature, as she sees it, is found not only in recognizable organic objects such as leaves and flowers but also in the intangible moments of change. Her paintings appear to be a meditation on this dichotomy; identifiable shapes and forms float within a mist of color, drips and texture. Through multiple layers of abstraction and combined mediums including a refined glazing technique, she creates rich organic patinas that evoke emotions, thoughts, and universal connecting points in the observer. The palimpsest quality of her painting allows the viewer, like Jones herself, to sift through the layers of paint thereby discovering the ever-shifting meaning behind each individual work. Jones’ paintings combine a poetic, almost sensual grace with consistently bold execution.
Jones' long-established career is highlighted by her work exhibited in select
international galleries and recent representation with Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia. Her paintings are highly sought after and can be found in numerous private and corporate collections world wide such as the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Studios, Scana Energy, and the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal. Jones currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia and recently completed three large-scaled commissioned paintings for the lobby of the McLean Hilton in Washington D.C.. She is currently working on her 2011 series, "Serenata", which debuted in a solo exhibition in New Mexico upon her return from a month long residency in Italy this Spring. Her prolific series of inspired works will continue thru 2012.
he things that inspire me to create are found all around me - in the seasons, weather patterns, and natural elements. The grace in a falling leaf from a tree in autumn, a pocket of air trapped in ice, the burnt edges on a flower in the hot summer, millions of crushed shells in the form of sand along the beach. The inspiration found in nature for my art seems endless. Beauty is everywhere and as an artist I interpret that beauty, trying to integrate my personal style, and put it out there for people to connect with.
Photo: Rick Newbyy work is part a spiritual search. It is a need to express what sometimes can only be felt;to create an experience unique to each individual. Viewers find themselves feeling calm, passionate, or remembering another place and/or time that may have been forgotten. The combination of various mediums and materials I enjoy working with include oil, acrylic, textured papers, asphalt, wood stain, glue, charcoal, wax and metal. My method of layering symbolizes change, time, and growth. Because of multi-layering, the paintings become an ongoing experience for the viewer. There are always new details to look at which earlier may have been missed. This also integrates my idea of trying to notice things in nature that some may overlook, or take for granted.
Photo: Rick Newbys I paint, each studio session becomes a form of meditation. My work is an intuitive process. The paint often dictates the final imagery and I allow this to be my guide. The colors I choose to glaze over one another create mood, atmosphere, and a vibration of energy unique to each viewer interacting with the final piece. Working with the paint and the various mediums and materials helps to build up and break down ideas, thoughts, and patterns. I believe that the process I follow when creating a new piece is just as important as the end result. As an artist, my most significant reward is to know that my work has affected even one viewer.
